Gold marks the stronger option in each row.Reelgood wins 4 of 8 — that is the honest count, not a rhetorical device.
Stay on Reelgood if…
- You want the widest possible view of what is available right now.
- Finding legally free films matters to you.
- You watch a lot of TV and want episode alerts.
- You are in the US, where its coverage is strongest.
- Controlling a Roku or LG TV from the app is genuinely handy.
Add a recommender if…
- You already know where things are; you just cannot pick one.
- You want the list ranked for you rather than filtered by you.
- You would rather not see ads while deciding.
- Three options beats three hundred.
Reelgood is a product of its respective owner. Filmatic is not affiliated with, endorsed by or partnered with it. Details were checked against their own site on the review date above; pricing and features change, so verify anything that matters to you.
Reelgood is the most complete streaming directory available. Over a hundred services in a single view, decent metadata, IMDb and Reelgood scores side by side, and — unusually — a working remote for Roku and LG televisions. The free-to-stream section is the best in the category and genuinely worth using.
None of which helps if the problem is that you do not know what you want.
Coverage and choosing are different problems
A directory’s job is completeness. It succeeds when nothing is missing, which means the interface has to present a very large number of items and give you filters to cut it down. That is the correct design for “is Heat streaming anywhere” and the wrong design for “what should I watch”.
Filtering is work you do. Ranking is work done for you. A directory hands you filters; a recommender hands you an answer. Reelgood does have recommendations, and they are perfectly decent, but they sit on top of a catalogue-shaped product optimising for breadth.
What Reelgood does better
Breadth, decisively. If a title is streaming in the US, Reelgood knows where.
Free-to-stream. Its handling of ad-supported and genuinely free services is the best here, and that is a real saving rather than a novelty.
TV. Episode tracking with alerts for new episodes. Filmatic does not do television at all.
The remote. Controlling a Roku or LG TV from the same app you browsed in removes a small daily annoyance, and no recommender does this.
The alternatives
If you want better international coverage: JustWatch. Broader country support and proper rental price comparison. See JustWatch alternatives for the same argument applied there.
If you want a diary and a community: Letterboxd, and nothing else is close. See Letterboxd alternatives.
If you want automatic tracking: Trakt, especially with Plex or Jellyfin. See Filmatic vs Trakt.
If you want quick similarity: TasteDive answers “something like this” in one step, with no model of you.
If you want the choosing solved: Filmatic. Swipes in, taste model out, short ranked list with availability by country. No ads, no affiliate links, no paid placement.
Where Filmatic is worse
- Narrower coverage. Major services by country, not a hundred-plus.
- No free-to-stream feature. Reelgood is better at this and we do not currently compete.
- No TV, no episode alerts. Films only.
- No device remote.
- Cold start. A directory works on your first search. A taste model needs swipes first.
The sensible setup
Use Reelgood as the map and a recommender as the compass. The map tells you what exists and where; the compass tells you which way to go. Most people who complain about streaming have an excellent map and no compass at all.
Questions
Is Reelgood better than JustWatch?
They overlap heavily. Reelgood has the better free-to-stream section and the device remote; JustWatch has broader international coverage and better rental price comparison. In the US it is close to a coin toss, and outside it JustWatch usually wins on coverage.
Does Reelgood recommend things?
Yes, and it is a reasonable feature — curated collections plus suggestions informed by what you track. The structural point is that it is a directory first, so the recommendations optimise for coverage of a large catalogue rather than precision about one person.
Is Reelgood free?
Yes, ad-supported, with affiliate links to services. There has historically been a paid tier removing ads; check their site for current pricing since this changes.
What works outside the US?
Reelgood's coverage is thinner internationally. JustWatch is generally the stronger choice outside the US, and Filmatic filters availability by country on the free tier.
Can I use a directory and a recommender together?
That is the configuration we would recommend. Decide with a recommender, confirm availability with a directory. They are solving different halves of the same evening.
