Gold marks the stronger option in each row.JustWatch wins 3 of 7 — that is the honest count, not a rhetorical device.
Stay on JustWatch if…
- You usually know the title already and just need to find it.
- You care about rental and purchase prices, not only subscriptions.
- You track TV and want episode notifications.
- You need the widest possible country and service coverage.
Add a recommender if…
- You open JustWatch, search nothing, and browse until you give up.
- The "new on Netflix" rows are not aimed at you in particular.
- You want a short list rather than a filterable catalogue.
- You would rather not be shown ads while deciding.
JustWatch is a product of its respective owner. Filmatic is not affiliated with, endorsed by or partnered with it. Details were checked against their own site on the review date above; pricing and features change, so verify anything that matters to you.
JustWatch is very good software. It solved a real problem — you know what you want, you have no idea which of six subscriptions has it — and it solved it comprehensively, in most countries, for free.
The trouble is that most evenings the problem is the other one.
The question JustWatch answers, and the one it doesn’t
A search engine needs a query. JustWatch is built around a search box and a set of filters, which means it is superb when you arrive with a title in mind and progressively less useful the vaguer you are. Arrive with “something good, ninety minutes, not depressing” and you are back to scrolling through rows.
It does have recommendations — thumbs up and down on titles, plus your browsing history, feed into suggestions — and it would be dishonest to claim otherwise. But that is a feature attached to a directory. The signals are coarse, the goal is coverage rather than precision, and there is an advertising and affiliate layer sitting in the same interface.
What JustWatch does better than anything else
Coverage. Services, countries, and the long tail of regional platforms. If a film is streaming somewhere in your territory, JustWatch probably knows.
Prices. It compares rental and purchase costs across stores, which no recommender does. If you are deciding whether to pay £3.49 or wait, that is JustWatch’s job and not ours.
TV tracking. Episode-level tracking with reliable notifications when a new one lands. Filmatic does not currently do this at all.
It is the industry’s data. A great deal of the availability data across the web, ours included, traces back to JustWatch. Complaining about its accuracy while using a tool built on it would be a bit rich.
The alternatives, by job
If you want a better directory: Reelgood. Over 100 services, curated collections, a genuinely useful free-to-stream section, IMDb and Reelgood scores side by side, and a remote control for Roku and LG televisions. Coverage is strongest in the US.
If you want quick similarity: TasteDive. Type a film, get things like it, across music and books too. No model of you, so it does not improve with use — but for one question, one answer, it is fast.
If you want cross-media personalised recommendations: Likewise covers film, TV, podcasts and books with a recommendation-first product. It is the closest positioning to Filmatic, and the honest differentiator is focus rather than technology.
If you want a diary: Letterboxd, and it is not close. See Letterboxd alternatives if that is really what you are after.
If you want the deciding solved: that is what we built. Filmatic is swipe-driven — liked, seen, save, skip — and every swipe sharpens a taste model held against your account. Open it and you get a short ranked list, with streaming availability for your country, no ads and no affiliate links.
Where Filmatic is worse
Worth stating plainly, because a page that only lists our advantages is not information.
- No rental or purchase prices. JustWatch does this properly and we do not do it at all.
- No episode notifications. If you are tracking a returning series, JustWatch wins outright.
- Narrower service coverage. Broad, but not JustWatch-broad, particularly for smaller regional platforms.
- It needs a few minutes to be useful. A search engine works on your first query. A taste model does not know you until you have swiped.
The configuration most people want
- Decide with a recommender. Thirty seconds, a short list, aimed at you.
- Confirm with JustWatch. Where it is, what it costs, whether it is leaving.
Two tools, two jobs. Replacing JustWatch is not the goal — it is the second half of an evening that starts with actually choosing something.
Questions
Does JustWatch recommend films?
It does, and it is worth being accurate about this. You can thumb titles up or down and it factors that plus your browsing into suggestions. The distinction is one of emphasis — recommendation is a feature layered onto a search engine, driven mainly by coarse signals, rather than a dedicated taste model.
What is the best free JustWatch alternative?
For where-to-watch, Reelgood is the closest free equivalent, with stronger US coverage and a good free-to-stream section. For deciding what to watch, Filmatic and TasteDive are free; Likewise is free too.
Is JustWatch accurate?
Generally yes, and it is the data most of the industry relies on. Streaming rights change constantly, so any availability tool is a snapshot — including ours. Check the service before you commit to an evening.
Why does JustWatch show me ads?
It is free and monetises through advertising and affiliate links to stores. That is a legitimate model, but it does mean commercial incentives sit alongside the recommendations, which is worth knowing when a particular rental keeps appearing.
Can I use both?
That is the sensible answer. Decide with a recommender, then confirm availability and price with JustWatch. They are complementary rather than competing.
